By interviewing dancers, business associates and critical supporters, director Matthew Diamond takes a Citizen Kane approach to getting at the creative heart of preeminent choreographer Paul Taylor in this Oscar-nominated documentary that focuses on intimate, behind-the-scenes glimpses of how the legendary choreographer and his immensely talented dance company create their works. While it effectively captures the emotional and physical rigors of the process, Dancemaker,--unfortunately--doesn't really shed much light on Taylor's elusive creative process. Still, the rich dance excerpts from his dance troupe, as well as archival footage of Taylor's earlier performances themselves, make this a must for fans or students of dance, while laypersons will find it an entertaining and moderately informative look at one of modern dances' premier 'movers and shakers'.
