Not just a standard interview or a catalog of songs, this sensitive and loving portrait of a legendary artist and complex man proves that Pavarotti, who is both articulate and intelligent, is not just another pretty voice. While he discusses standard issues such as his early training, favorite roles and musical preferences, he also reveals some surprising and captivating details about himself. These range from deeply felt religious beliefs, early career aspirations (teaching, professional sports) and thoughts on friendship to telling reflections on animals and even...his beard! Interesting commentary, along with first-rate photography and brilliant editing place this head and shoulders above similar fare. The film concludes with a signature aria, Nessun Dorma, along with a series of shots spanning his long career. Neither hagiographic nor warts-and-all (this was produced before the artist's now well-publicized domestic turmoil), but a refreshing, insightful view of a well-known figure. Highly recommended.
