A compressed biography of ‘60s folk sensations Peter, Paul, and Mary laced with archival performances (many drawn from their sundry PBS appearances), the PBS-aired Carry It On is a stirring, sometimes enlightening story of a marriage between music and activism. Heirs to the outspoken legacy of Pete Seeger and his group the Weavers, PP&M clicked personally and artistically after being introduced through a manager, and within a year their breakout 1962 hit "Lemon Tree" had put them on the frontline of America's folk movement. This profile traces the trio's rising popularity, knack for choosing great material to record (from the likes of Bob Dylan and John Denver), and deepening commitment to social justice in the 1960s and beyond, including appearances at the Martin Luther King Jr.-led March on Washington and fact-finding at a refugee camp in El Salvador. Interviewees include Seeger and fellow Weaver Ronnie Gilbert, as well as Richie Havens and Tom Paxton. Featured songs (in full or part) include “If I Had a Hammer,” “Blowin' in the Wind,” “Leavin' on a Jet Plane,” “Puff, the Magic Dragon,” and in the final suite of 1996-2003 performances, the group is joined by great guests such as John Sebastian and Dave Van Ronk, all presented in Dolby Digital stereo. Highly recommended. Aud: P. (T. Keogh)
