"When one is celebrating the martyrdom of somebody, one is celebrating that person's full belief and full practice of Christianity and devoted following of Christ, long before the moment of shedding blood came." So inspired, we are introduced to the who, what, and why of Christian martyrdom, from Stephen in the first 1st century to Dietrich Bonhoeffer in the 20th (see VL-1/97 for a review of Hanged on a Twisted Cross: The Life, Convictions and Martyrdom of Dietrich Bonhoeffer). Via authoritative interviews with some of the best "talking heads" I've ever seen, location footage, reconstructions, and Christian art, we come to know a few of the men and women who not only dedicated their lives to spreading the word of Christ, but also, in a larger context, contributed to the political and social factors which shaped the face of Christianity. I would have appreciated an acknowledgment that the idea of religious martyrdom has been responsible for quite a few wars over the centuries, but, other than that, this tape is most highly recommended. Also available in this reasonably priced series: Celtic Saints, New Testament Witnesses and Religions Around the World. Aud: J, H, C, P. (K. Glaser)
