Playing One Way: Drug Free
The Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) had the makings of a really solid anti-drug tape in their game plan, but fumbled badly in the execution. To wit: while the review copy of this program from the Cross Training Video series was labeled "Public School Version," there were too many proselytizing moments to make it appropriate for public schools. For instance, "cross training" refers to THE cross, and in case that point's too subtle, there are MTV-like drawings of a cross flashing in between segments. Hosted by the very personable Steve Fitzhugh (formerly of the Denver Broncos), the tape includes interviews with NBA MVP David Robinson, Women's World Cup Soccer team member Michelle Akers, NFL Hall of Famer/Congressman Steve Largent and NFL Coach of the Year Dan Reeves, all launching offensive attacks against the destructive forces of drugs and alcohol. Many of the interviewees, however, talk about how having "Christian" friends kept them from doping...as if devout Muslim, Jewish, or even non-believing friends would not be a good influence. The FCA would have been able to reach more people with their solid anti-drug message if they had only followed the Apostle Paul's advice to be all things to all people...and provided a secular message appropriate for secular settings. Unfortunately, as it is, the tape is recommended only for parochial and "Christian" schools. Aud: J, H. (R. Reagan)
