If million-dollar sales are a criterion, Western art has achieved credibility and moved into the mainstream of fine art. Self-taught sculptor Mehl Lawson is a leading practitioner of the genre and this well-rounded portrait not only provides details of his life and work but also of cowboy life, the various styles of Western art and the modern art market. Lawson was a prize winning horse trainer and showman who became a full time artist in 1978, and we see him in action here in both arenas. Traveling with Lawson to the Cowboy Hall of Fame and the Cowboy Artists of America Museum we view works that inspired him--landscapes, pastels, and watercolors--side by side with his own works. Colleagues say that he "capsulizes all that is Western" and see him as "a true Western gentleman" and this is reinforced by scenes where he is shown with family, at worship, and at play, as well as giving back to the art community through his fundraising efforts. An informative, enjoyable testament to the fact that realistic Western art is alive and well and should flourish well into the 21st century. Highly recommended. Aud: H, C, P. (J. Reed)
