Another example in the exemplary "Portrait of an Artist" series, this 3-part set devoted to the Renaissance artist Raphael is beautifully photographed. Viewers are treated to a wide array of Raphael's works, including many of his lesser known paintings. Volume 1 is set in Central Italy where Raphael's style evolved from his formative years at the Court of Urbino, through his apprenticeship with Perugino to the development of his own style under the two older titans of the Renaissance--Leonardo and Michelangelo. Volume 2 takes place in Rome, the site of Raphael's great works created for the Vatican. Volume 3 traces the enduring heritage of Raphael through the centuries following the Renaissance. Written and narrated by David Thompson, former art critic of the London Times, this three-part series includes valuable discussions of great themes of the period, such as Christianity and its relationship to classical humanism, and the basis of "classical" style and the origins of "academic art". For these reasons, it would be a useful supplement for high school or college level courses in Western Civilization, as well as surveys of art history. Recommended for high school, college, and public libraries. (Available from: Home Vision, 5547 N. Ravenswood Ave., Chicago, IL 60640-1199, or call 1-800-323-4222.)
