In this first installment of an ongoing project, actor Billy Angel stresses the importance of hearing scripture read as well as committing it to memory as he presents 22 of his favorite psalms (primarily based on the King James Bible), which he recites as he moves through various outdoor settings. While this could be an effective and inspirational experience, Angel's approach—too emotive and intense by half—is counterproductive to the prayerful state. In addition, each short section is introduced by the same title information and credits, leading to repeated fast-forwarding. These drawbacks lessen the effectiveness of this otherwise worthy undertaking (the optional English-language subtitles are helpful in following Angel's accented speech as well as in aiding memorization). Psalms Alive, Part 1 is accompanied by a pair of fine bonus features: an introduction to the psalms and a segment on learning scripture by heart. Recommended for larger religion collections, this is an optional purchase elsewhere. Aud: P. (J. Reed)
