His art has been in numerous galleries. He has a published book of his extraordinary animal portraits. He has even been honored in the U.S. Congressional Record. These accomplishments would be impressive for any artist, but they are especially so considering that Raymond Hu is only 19 years old and was born with Down's Syndrome. This thought-provoking video provides a sensitive and detailed look into Hu's world. Interviews with his family, teachers, and friends, intercut with his own testimonial give a balanced picture of his unique experience. Hu is portrayed as neither tragic nor heroic--just another teenager who happens to have an amazing amount of talent. Dismantling stereotypes, the video shows Hu not only doing his artwork, but also playing sports, hanging out with his best friend, interacting in the classroom, etc. Despite his difficulty forming words due to the Down's Syndrome, he is articulate and engaging. Hu was one of the first full-inclusion students in his school, but unfortunately there is not much discussion of this controversial topic and how it affected him. However, this intelligent video challenges the viewer to see Hu without the labels his condition normally imposes. Recommended. Aud: J, H, C, P. (E. Gieschen)
