Profiles in Respect is one of seven volumes in the Real Character, Real People series, which examines the components of good character (such as courage or honesty) by profiling the lives of real people—both teens and adults. This particular title deals with respect: what it is, how it's shown, and who deserves it. Two adult role models are profiled: Antonio Villaraigosa, the newly elected mayor of Los Angeles, and Don McPherson, former NFL player and current director of sports leadership programs. Teen role models include Jessica Leuders-Dumont, who works with marine life conservancy and education projects, and members of Team Push America, a summer event that involves cross-country biking to raise money and awareness for the disabled. Each “real people” segment is bridged with discussion from a roundtable-style diverse student panel moderated by author/teacher Dr. Hal Urban. Featuring a variety of unscripted voices, this is an effective tool for getting viewers to think about respect in everyday life. Other titles in the series include Profiles in Citizenship, Profiles in Courage, Profiles in Honesty, and Profiles in Responsibility. Recommended. Aud: J, H. (E. Gieschen)
