Winner of First Prize in the 1989 Great Video Review Shootoff competition sponsored by Video Review magazine, Mary Ann Michna's Remembering James Dean is an often humorous look into the world of James Dean fans. Although a home video production, Michna has captured some wonderfully unaffected moments on tape: a trivia collector sharing his notebook with the camera, an annual speech given on Dean's death after which the speaker climbs astride his motorcycle and leads the mourners to Dean's grave, a discussion about the differences between Dean fans and Elvis fans, etc. Michna's visits to Fairmount, Indiana, Dean's hometown, turned up some interesting characters, including Dean's high school biology teacher who tells a story about Dean's involvement in 4H which doesn't make a whole lot of sense (although he clearly enjoys telling the story). Inexpensive, and likely to be popular, Remembering James Dean is recommended. (Available from: Starkirk Productions, Inc., 3848 S. Sherman Dr., Indianapolis, IN 46237.)
