Growing up in the shadow of Oak Park, IL, I was hardly unaware of the architect Frank Lloyd Wright and his Prairie School of design. However, I'm embarrassed to admit I've never taken a tour of one of his homes! Viewers will have the opportunity to do just that in this Telly award-winning video, highlighting the restoration of Heurtley House (which Wright designed for local banker Arthur Heurtley and his wife in 1902), a low, compact house with variegated brickwork and unconventional colors that must have stood out in shocking comparison to the classical Victorian mansions that filled the neighborhood. Hoping to return the house to its former glory, the current owners embarked on a five-year restoration project in 1997, and this program chronicles the fascinating efforts of a team of artists and architects who used their knowledge of Prairie design and not a little bit of detective work to get in touch with Wright's original vision (the ramshackle shed on the property actually contained many of the original architectural elements intact and hidden away--doors, urns, and the original chain for a centerpiece light fixture). A solid video not only for architecture students, but for general audiences with an interest in the arts as well, this is recommended. Aud: H, C, P. (J. Asala)
