Taking their cue from bookstores, the Frankfort Public Library in Illinois and a branch of the Maricopa Public Library in Arizona switched from the Dewey Decimal System to an arrangement based on broad subject areas, or topical “neighborhoods.” Administrators and staff from both institutions appear here to talk about why they decided to arrange their collections first by keywords/topics, and second by alphabet, rather than call numbers and the reaction thus far (highly positive). The interviewees cite consumer research that suggests patrons are more likely to visit public libraries as “an experience,” rather than to find a specific item, so the nontraditional approach adopted here is more tailor-made for browsers. Assorted other strategies helped improve traffic and increase circulation, including lower shelves, online maps depicting the interior layout, comfortable seating, creative lighting, prominent signs, book covers facing outward, and colorful displays. Rethinking the Call Number acknowledges that the highlighted examples are smaller public libraries, noting that the unconventional approach is likely inappropriate for a research collection. But for those considering a similar undertaking or looking for ways to promote increased usage, the experience-based tips presented here are extremely useful and the outcomes inspiring. Highly recommended. Aud: C, P. (M. Puffer-Rothenberg)
