Originally airing on the PBS American Masters series, Richard Avedon: Darkness and Light is a particularly well-filmed profile, which befits the subject, arguably one of the greatest photographers in history. An outstanding retrospective view of Avedon's body of work, the film surveys his commercial and artistic photography in about equal measure, combining a sumptuous sampling of Avedon's images (some of which are absolutely iconic) with insightful interviews with, among others, theater director Andre Gregory, magazine editor Tina Brown, film director Mike Nicols, and Avedon himself. If a picture is worth a thousand words, then this film is worth hundreds of thousands of words, with its engaging showcase of the one of the most impressive portfolios of the 20th century. Highly recommended. Editor's Choice. Aud: H, C, P. (P. Van Vleck)
