Since his breakthrough performance with the English National Opera in 1985, Canadian singer Richard Margison—who embodies the heroic tenor, with his imposing physical appearance, ringing top notes, and solid lower registers—has enjoyed a career that has taken him to virtually all the major opera houses in the world. This engrossing documentary describes Margison's unique career path, which began with stints as a troubadour folk performer in Canadian coffee houses and led to the Victoria Conservatory, where he studied with Selena James. Despite success in the operatic realm, Margison has never lost his love for his musical roots, being that rare classical artist able to crossover without “sounding like an opera singer singing folk music.” His life story unfolds through archival stills and footage (including clips of his teenage performances), interspersed with interviews with colleagues; present-day sessions with his old partner, Greg Davidson; duets with one of his heroes, folk/rock legend Bruce Cockburn; and a resounding performance of “Nessun Dorma,” from Puccini's Turandot. Warm and engaging, this is a well-rounded portrait of the artist and a treat for music lovers of all persuasions. DVD extras include full performances of the highlighted musical selections.
