Without the Dominican Republic, professional baseball in America would be a mere shadow of itself: the island nation provides more players to the U.S. than any other country in the world. Much like their Yank counterparts, Dominican lads grow up with baseball dreams, but—due to extreme poverty—are often seen playing with sticks and bottle caps (Boston Red Sox player David Ortiz was particularly fond of doll heads, which caused his sister no end of frustration). Driven by their dire situations, these kids give their all in the hopes that they may someday be able to provide for their families. Director Jared Goodman profiles several prospects, including Vladimir Gomez, a charismatic pre-teen with talent and ambition; 17-year-old Juan Cabrera, who is in the midst of minor league tryouts; and Miguel Mercedes, who was signed to a league but then lost his contract when his real age came to light (any fact-altering serves as grounds for dismissal). With the San Diego Padres and St. Louis Cardinals in his sights, Cabrera attends a baseball academy where he hones his skills on the diamond, while taking English lessons. Of course, for all the talent on display, only a few of these students will succeed (Vladimir Guerrero of the Los Angeles Angels says he would be planting okra today if he hadn't made it to the big leagues). Also featuring interviews with Dominican scouts, managers, and instructors, DVD extras include interviews with the director and Minnesota Twins player Carlos Gomez, as well as a pair of featurettes. Sure to appeal to diamond fans, this is recommended. Aud: C, P. (K. Fennessy)
