Donizetti's 1837 opera centers on the titular Earl of Essex's dalliance with a mature Queen Elizabeth I, ending with his rebellion and execution. In this 2015 production from Madrid's Teatro Real, the monarch is portrayed as a spider-like manipulator, at one point even clambering about the stage on an elevated metal throne propelled by eight legs—a striking effect that unfortunately is one of the only elements of visual interest in Alessandro Talevi's staging, which is otherwise prosaic, sporting sparse sets and costumes that are mostly a dull black (apart from the queen's blood-red gown). Musically, this version is also somewhat lackluster. Gregory Kunde sounds a mite out of sorts as Essex, his voice fierce and loud enough to often overwhelm the Elizabeth of veteran soprano Mariella Devia, who at age 67 can still negotiate the role's formidable demands but in a tone that is understandably thinner than ideal, with a pronounced wobble in the upper register, and notes that occasionally turn acidic. Devia is certainly aided by the supportive conducting of Bruno Campanella, whose leisurely tempi seem designed to accommodate her current technique, and the supporting cast, orchestra, and chorus perform ably. Overall, however, this lacks the sheer beauty of vocalism that should mark bel canto opera, and a better choice would be the 2006 Bergamo mounting (VL-9/08). Presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 and PCM stereo on DVD, and DTS-HD 5.1 and PCM stereo on Blu-ray, this is a strong optional purchase. (F. Swietek)
