Saltwater Cowboys: The Story of the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company

The tragic September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks have reminded people of the heroism of our nation's firefighters; yet, while rural volunteer firefighters often enjoy a high profile in their communities, they generally garner little in the way of funding support. For 75 years, the Chincoteague (Virginia) Volunteer Fire Company, which answers 700 calls per annum, has rounded up and auctioned wild ponies from nearby Assasteague Island to pay for their equipment and gear. Capped by the pony swim from one island to the other, this annual event--immortalized in Marguerite Henry's book Misty of Chincoteague--is winningly captured in this entertaining documentary profiling the year-round planning and work that goes into this popular summer festival and auction. Produced by the same team that created Chincoteague: Virginia's Island Treasure (VL-11/95), this fine program will find a ready audience among horse lovers, armchair travelers, and most anyone who enjoys Americana.
