Sarah Brightman in Concert at the Royal Albert Hall

Captured live in her solo debut at the Royal Albert Hall in 1997, the former Mrs. Andrew Lloyd Webber (whose rather striking resemblance to Monica Lewinsky led me to look away uncomfortably during the operatic numbers when her eyes grew cartoon-wide and her mouth formed a perfect "O") performs 14 numbers (more if you count the medley tunes separately) across a wide musical range (from Peer Gynt to Porgy & Bess). While sure to appeal to devoted fans of the "angel of music" (of which there appeared to be many in attendance, as Ms. Brightman gave two encores--performing a total of two songs in a 20-minute span that should have been seriously edited), the eclectic mix presented here only in Dolby Digital stereo--classical, Broadway, Lloyd Webber--makes for an uneven outing. For the record, tunes include: "Bailero" (from The Songs of the Auvergne), "Pie Jesu" (a truly beautiful number from Lloyd Webber's non-theatrical Requiem), a medley from West Side Story, "Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again" and "The Music of the Night" (from Phantom of the Opera), "Whistle Down the Wind" (in a duet with Lloyd Webber), "Time to Say Goodbye" (in a duet with Andrea Bocelli), and "Don't Cry for Me Argentina" (from Evita). Interestingly enough, this last sounds almost like a personal apologia in light of Evita Peron's plaintive cry that she never asked for fortune and fame. Optional. Aud: P. (R. Pitman)
