A dry, uninvolving look at the origins of some of Scotland's most well-known clans, such as the Campbells, Armstrongs, Brodies, and Bruces, the double video set Scottish Clans is unlikely to appeal even to fans of Braveheart and Rob Roy. The interminable recitation of 'begats' is hardly the stuff of which legends are made, and even the scenery of Scotland is subdued; we may as well be tracing the lineage of the Hatfields and the McCoys and showing pictures of their backwoods abodes. To add pain to boredom, the producers have kindly treated viewers to a reading of some Scottish verse that sounds like someone gargling in the morning with motor oil. Make no mistake, there is a fascinating story to be told in the often bloody, always troubled history of Scotland, but this video set doesn't capture it. Recommended only for large libraries where Scottish materials and genealogical information are actively sought; for others this is not a necessary purchase. Aud: P. (J. Carlson)
