Producer, writer, and narrator Jim Mitchell takes viewers on a journey along the Pacific coastline of California and Oregon in this often pleasant but overwritten video travelogue. Purple prose threatens to drown Mitchell's description of the way the ocean has carved out the interesting rocks and coves which dot the coastline. In addition to gazing at the ocean, the program pays homage to the magnificent California Redwoods, visits Oregon streams, and stops off at the seaport town Winchester Bay Oregon. Here, Mitchell interviews fisherman Fred Taylor in an interesting sequence that is strangely out of place with the rest of the Hallmark Card-type narration. Secrets of the Pacific offers some lovely views of the Pacific Ocean (in fact, particularly impressive for video footage), yet it seems to wander without purpose. Too, Mitchell's conclusion that the Pacific "laughs" at man, because the latter can't touch the ocean is a bit more optimistic (or pleasantly self-deluded) than the reality of environmental pollution would allow. An optional purchase. (See ON TOP OF THE WORLD WITH ANNE MARTIN: NOVA SCOTIA for availability.)
