Ably narrated by John Cullum, Secrets of the Soul combines two documentaries on the subject of the soul. The first, “The Searchers,” takes a more spiritual approach, following vision quests (attempts to connect with a higher power through solitary journeys) in the Arizona desert to frame the content, which includes discussions regarding the nature of the soul, theories of the afterlife, and common threads on the path to the divine (concluding that while people may search for the soul in different ways, they ultimately share the same goal). The second documentary, “The Investigators,” studies whether the existence of the soul or continuation of human consciousness can be scientifically confirmed, looking at reincarnation, the work of mediums, and near-death experiences, as it balances positive findings with commentary from the publisher of Skeptic magazine. Skillfully produced and thoughtfully scripted, this would be a good discussion starter for religious study groups. DVD extras include bonus footage with Q&A “person on the street” interviews.
