Little Brown Jug isn't just the traditional packaging for moonshine, it's also the name of a wildflower that is currently being studied for its antibiotic properties. Smoky Wildflowers looks at sixty wildflowers (many rare and endangered) which are native to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and its particular genius lies in the fact that the flowers are profiled according to their trail location and bloom times, so that one can plan a trip to see desired specimens at their peak. On-screen graphics list the common and botanical names of each flower, while additional information is offered voice-over, including the plants' habitat, elevation range, folk names and uses, and reminders about illegal digging. Combine all this with subtle background music and, oh yes, fabulous floral videography over three seasons, and you have a real treat. Since the park is the most-visited in the U.S., this will be a welcome purchase for any public library. Highly recommended. Editor's Choice. A companion volume, Smoky Images, is also available for $19.95. Aud: P. (R. Reagan)

As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
