Ever heard of “trackers”? No, we didn't say “trekkies,” although, come to think of it, there is some similarity between the two groups. Both are fanatical about their nostalgic interests, but instead of lavishing their attentions on an old TV series, trackers dedicate themselves to collecting old 8-track tapes and players. This delightfully dotty 1999 documentary, er, tracks some of these passionate hobbyists, allowing them ample opportunity to explain their devotion to the long-defunct technology. Among the 20 or so trackers interviewed on camera are such “legendary” collectors as Abigail Levine, James “Big Bucks” Burnette, and Phil Millstein. Some of the interviewees seem fairly normal, but others…well, you know those guys who get fixated on certain things and wind up living in their parents' basements? Let's just say that that personality type is well represented here. The documentary is crudely shot and edited, but that's half the fun, as it has the feel of something put together with a camcorder by backyard filmmakers with little money but big enthusiasm—and that enthusiasm is infectious, making this a unique and entertaining film. DVD extras include director's commentary, bonus interviews (with David Byrne, Tiny Tim, and T-Bone Burnett), a behind-the-scenes slideshow, and episodes from the 8-Track Mind videozine. Recommended.
