Strait Through the Ice

In just a couple of decades, global warming has accomplished what centuries of polar explorers couldn't: the opening of the fabled Northwest Passage in the far north region of Canada. Coupled with the increasing congestion of traditional routes, the prospect of a new year-round maritime option makes the Passage especially attractive to shipping companies. But that possibility also forces the nations most concerned—Canada, the United States, Russia, Denmark, and Norway—to examine traditional ideas of sovereignty. Environmental protection, development of oil and other natural resources, and the prospect of terrorists using the lightly controlled waters to launch attacks are just a few of the issues involved. Director Yves Billy interviews climatologists, local residents, shipping executives, glaciologists, military leaders, and others to provide wide-ranging perspectives on the ramifications of sailing through the Passage, interweaving throughout stunning shots of the Arctic environment and ice in one of the world's least-known regions.
