In the era of "English first!" debates, it should be recalled that the first European language in North America was Spanish. This program begins with a history of the development of New Spain in what is today's U.S., while the second portion looks at the French explorations and settlements in Canada and the latter-day States. The attitudes of the two nationalities toward the Native Americans and former Africans are compared and contrasted. Although the video does not discuss the English settlements of the Eastern seaboard, this is probably due to time considerations and the wealth of other material available on the subject. With its excellent teacher's guide (containing review questions, a quiz, comparison worksheet, glossary, and the script), organized information and solid production values, this tape is highly recommended.
