Superbowl Dreams, a weak echo of the outstanding documentary Hoop Dreams, introduces us to the Pop Warner football program for children and youth in two small Massachusetts communities, reminding viewers through interviews with parents and volunteer coaches that participation in football builds teamwork, self confidence, provides role models, and is an appropriate outlet for extra energy. Unfortunately, the film's purpose--for making, essentially, an extended commercial for Pop Warner football--is unclear. If the viewer is supposed to get involved in the drama of two small town teams competing with larger cities for titles and championships, then he/she needs to get to know the players and coaches as individuals (which we don't). If, on the other hand, the title is supposed to be educational, then one would expect to hear from various experts on the values of sports participation, football in particular (which we don't). While it's easy to agree that participation in team sports builds character and healthy habits, this video didn't offer anything that isn't already general public knowledge. Not recommended. Aud: P.
