Swan Lake is almost synonymous with classical ballet, so there are several productions to choose from, each seeking to bring something new to the interpretation. This handsome mounting by the Royal Swedish Ballet Stockholm provides a fresh perspective without distorting the beauty or tradition of this well-known, beloved story, in which the beautiful princess Odette (Nathalie Nordquist), an enchanted swan by day thanks to the evil Baron von Rothbart, falls in wonderfully reciprocated love with the marriage-minded Prince Siegfried, only to be thwarted by Rothbart, who advances his daughter Odile (a ringer for Odette, also played by Nordquist) instead, with semi-tragic results. While Siegfried has traditionally been a passive onlooker much of the time--with little to do but pose and partner the ballerina--director Peter Jacobsson has here added some much needed motivation for the prince, and choreographer Peter Wright provides opportunities for the male principal to showcase his virtuosity, even as he honors the original Petipa/Ivanov choreography. Ultimately, this is a noble production, dramatically staged with rich costuming, seamless partnering, and a precise corps de ballet, all adding up to a satisfying performance presented in sparkling Dolby Digital 5.1 sound. Featured extras include interviews with Wright, Jacobsson, and the two principal dancers, as well as a list of notable productions from the past. Recommended for any collection that is not already top-heavy in other versions. Aud: H, C, P. (J. Reed)
