Energetic and charming storyteller Anita Singleton-Prather tells viewers that three out of four slaves coming to America sailed through a group of sea islands off the coast of South Carolina, transplanting and merging the African culture with the existing community, forming the genesis of African-American culture today. Surrounded by a lovely bayou set design and backed by old spiritual songs sung by "The Gullah Kinfolk" group, Singleton-Prather entertains and enlightens viewers with tales from the rich and colorful history of these islands. Playing Cousin Gallie (the Spiritual Leader), Miss Chunnie (the Root Lady), Miss Cutchie (the Floozy), and Aunt Pearlie-Sue (based on Singleton-Prather's grandmother Rosa Singleton), Singleton-Prather absolutely enchants with each new persona. "Cousin Gallie," for instance, shares the story of a newly baptized young man who went to jail and was "lucky" enough to get 99 years instead of a life sentence. Lucky? Maybe not for the young man, but certainly for libraries purchasing this little gem. Highly recommended. Also available, Tales from the Land of Gullah for Kids. Aud: P. (N. Plympton)
