A horrifying documentary featuring raw footage of Israel's attacks on Gaza in the winter of 2008-09, Tears of Gaza offers no polite analysis of the Palestinian situation. Norwegian filmmaker Vibeke Løkkeberg—directing remotely, after she was denied access to Gaza—relies on local camera operators to capture an immediate, street-level view of Israeli bombings of ordinary neighborhoods, nighttime invasions by tanks, the unnerving presence of drones and helicopters, and an aftermath of house raids in which small children have clearly been shot at point-blank range. Løkkeberg attempts to bring structure to the narrative by linking specific scenes from this reign of terror to several young children who witnessed the carnage. But the constant attack on homes and families results in relentless chaos in this unnarrated documentary that offers a sobering eyewitness account of a hellish situation.
