The Amazing Human Body

The human body undergoes continual transformation throughout the human life span, growing from a single cell to over 30 trillion cells. This three-part PBS/BBC documentary notes that the body is "always a work in progress." The brain is sculpted by individual experiences and interactions, good and bad, while the body is capable of amazing regeneration, including the skin, stomach lining, and even the skeletal system, which is replaced several times. Human language sets us apart from other animals, with most people acquiring a vocabulary of over 75,000 words. Puberty is the most complex period, when young adults learn social skills that are needed to survive, including setting goals, getting along with others, and beginning the search for a mate. On the physical side, the documentary explores the role of friendly bacteria that help us cope with invasions and infections, maintaining the body's delicate balancing process. Also covered are protective mechanisms such as disgust (keeping things out of or away from us), pain as an alarm system, and fear—the "fight or flight" reaction. Emotions are just as important, including laughter, empathy, and the natural desire to be accepted by peers. Looking at spelling bees, a teenage drill team, trick-bike riding, and an 87-year-old long distance runner, The Amazing Human Body offers plenty of real-life examples of the body and mind in action.
