In 1839, a group of African slaves were being transported from one part of Cuba to another after having been subjected to incredible hardships on their trans-Atlantic crossing. When one of the Africans heard about the terrible conditions he and his fellow tribesmen were going to face, he led a revolt on board the ship Amistad. He forced the Spaniards to set a course back to Africa, but since he knew little about navigation, he was unaware that the ship was actually heading up the eastern seaboard of the United States. The Amistad was captured by the Americans and towed into the harbor at New London, Connecticut. This set the stage for one of the most fascinating chain of events in the sorry story of slavery in this country revolving around some of the most influential men and women of the time. Part riveting courtroom drama, part compelling social commentary, this tale (as splendidly told by narrator Vinie Burrows) deserves to reach a wide audience, especially with the upcoming Steven Spielberg feature film, Amistad, set for Christmas release. Enthusiastically recommended. Editor's Choice. Aud: H, C, P. (J. Carlson)
