In the never-ending parade of so-called "reality shows" on TV these days, one of the very best is on The Learning Channel: Trading Spaces, which in a mere two years has become TLC's highest rated program in history--a top spot it won without deception, alliances, immunity idols, or dirty tricks. Based on the English program Changing Rooms, the show's simple premise gives two families the opportunity to practice the not-so-golden rule of "Do Unto Others Before They Do It Unto You." Each family is given $1,000, the guidance of a professional interior decorator and carpenter, and told to redecorate in two days one room in the other family's house. What results is often outlandish, occasionally weird, and always guaranteed to elicit a continuous screeching of "ohmigods" when owners get their first view of the new room. Of course, not every redecorating effort is appreciated, and that's what makes the show fun. DVD extras include a blooper reel, an introduction to the cast (including the effervescent hostess, Paige Davis), several do-it-yourself decorating tips, and information on how to get on the show. Most public libraries will want to re-decorate their DVD collections with this warm, informative, and thoroughly delightful production. Highly recommended. Aud: P. (J. Carlson)
