How are birthdays celebrated in other countries? This charming video briefly explains how birthday parties came about (they were originally intended as a means of warding off evil spirits), and then examines both the history and varying customs of the birthday party in other lands: Germany was the first country to have birthday parties for children; England administered the traditional spankings by bumping the bum of the birthday boy or girl on the ground; Japanese birthday parties are generally limited to family and close friends, and there are no gifts; the Mexican birthday is celebrated by bashing a piñata filled with goodies, etc. Director Dirk Wales has put together a delightful little paean that is not only of historical interest, but is also designed to be used at a birthday party. Highly recommended. (Available from: Chip Taylor Communications, 15 Spollett Dr., Derry, NH 03038;1-800-876-CHIP.)
