Located in the "land of shining mountains," Glacier National Park in northern Montana straddles the crest of the Continental Divide, offering a dazzling variety of waterfalls, flower-filled meadows, lakes, small glaciers, narrow valleys, and craggy cliffs. Twice the size of Rhode Island, the park is blessed with an incredible variety of plants, birds, and mammals on its one-million-acres-plus (encompassing several distinct climate regions). Nature lovers will savor footage of the park's animal "icons," the sure-footed mountain goat, bighorn sheep, and black bears (in the 1990s, the gray wolf was reintroduced as a predator in the park). Humans have also left their mark in this wilderness: Native Americans, French, and English fur trappers were the only residents in 1803 at the time of the Louisiana Purchase, but railroads followed within decades and soon tourists were filling the newly constructed hotels. With its vintage views, beautiful color footage, and informative commentaries, The Crown of the Continent is an attractive introduction to Glacier National Park that is sure to appeal to hikers and other visitors who will appreciate the helpful advice and low-key appeal to keep the area "forever wild." Recommended, even though this is a little pricey for a travel title. Aud: P. (S. Rees)
