Many people recall the story of two Tlingit teenagers who were sentenced by their tribal council to a period of isolated banishment in Alaska, but this is perhaps the first video to tell the story from the Tlingit point of view. The incident attracted international media attention and provoked heated discussion both in the Native American and global communities, raising several questions: what is "cruel and unusual punishment?" Were the youths given preferential treatment by being turned over to their tribal court for justice? What is the purpose of punishment for crimes? This is a masterful look at the complicated issue of tradition vs. modernity. The elders' visits to the boys (isolated on different islands) suggests the efficacy of the traditional punishment in light of the boy's changed attitudes. Yet, after twelve months, prosecutors argued that the two were being held on Federal lands, and they were removed to face the Snohomish County court in Washington state where they were sentenced to 18 months and 30 months in jail--ultimately serving time in both the Tlingit and "white" worlds. Highly recommended; school librarians should note this is especially recommended for debate/speech classes. Aud: H, C, P. (R. Reagan)
