With the decline of feudalism and the rise of the Renaissance, new thinking and a spirit of discovery ushered in the Great Age of Exploration. Faster dissemination of information, new inventions, and increased need for foreign trade all helped Europe enter what would be a century and a half period of incredible expansion. Beginning with Prince Henry's navigation school in Portugal and ending with the Spanish conquests of South America, this video offers a concise but thorough history of the major voyages of Columbus, Vespucci, Cabot, Magellan, Cortés, and Pizarro. Key terms are shown and given in context, and the blending of maps, historical art, and modern footage is excellent. The subject of European conquest and colonization is often sensitive today, but this video manages to be fairly objective. The accompanying materials include lots of map work as well as other comprehensive activities. Highly recommended. Aud: J, H. (E. Gieschen)
