Filmmaker Penny Price's documentary challenges the traditional approach to medicine, which views the human body as a machine with problems that can only be fixed bio-mechanically—i.e., by either altering the body through drugs or surgery, or by making genetic changes. Many alternative healers here offer a different view, suggesting that we are all made of energy that sometimes goes haywire and we become sick. Newer genetic science has shown that external and internal factors switch the flow of genetic information on or off; environment and emotions, for example, can lead to the release of chemicals that affect genetic expression. Therefore, medicine must treat the whole person, taking into account a patient's entire environment and emotional reality. Everything impacts our health, says the wide array of doctors, researchers, and therapists in The Healing Field, all of whom practice various forms of “energy medicine,” arguing that people should seek out bio-medicine specialists who recognize the body as a dynamic holistic system in which treatment for a problem in one area can have a cascading effect elsewhere. Energy medicine practices have been around for thousands of years, most notably in Qigong (an exercise that balances mind, body, and spirit via movement and posture) and guided meditation, but this program also looks at more current methods, such as “vibrational sound healing,” which uses ringing sounds to encourage healing at a cellular level. Extras include bonus interviews and self-healing practices. An interesting alternative healing documentary that will be embraced by some and dismissed by others, this is recommended. Aud: C, P. (T.
