Artist Judith Weinshall Liberman was born in 1929, the same year as Anne Frank, but spent her teenage years in Israel. Exhibited here are some 40 wall hangings she has created featuring scenes and maps depicting and commemorating the Holocaust. Although the camera cannot adequately capture the texture of the works, it does a good job in conveying the details of images created from appliqué, block prints, and beads. Sewn almost entirely by hand, these hangings bear moving testimony to people, places and events--some infamous (Kristallnacht), some less well known (the fate of the gypsies). One wall hanging maps the progress of Anne Frank from her place of birth to her final destination, marking her passage with a series of portrait block prints, each growing fainter with each station along the way. Created some 25 years after Liberman began her career in art, these are the culmination of the technique and work of an artist whose creative vision and craftsmanship tell a story we can never forget. A wonderful companion piece to the exhibit, but worthwhile when viewed alone. Recommended. Aud: H, C, P. (J. Reed)
