The Irish in America

Oppressed and starving, five million people (over half the population of Ireland) left their Irish roots and came in droves to America, the promised land. Through historical footage, personal accounts and interviews, and nicely filmed reenactments, we quickly learn the Irish hardships were just beginning. Fighting bigotry, as well as political and religious persecution, many Irish did eventually find the American dream, and their story is visually well-presented here. Unfortunately, actor Aidan Quinn's narration is delivered in a boring monotone--and it nearly ruins the program. Recommended, with the above reservation. Aud: J, H, P. (N. Plympton)
