Using excerpted highlights from a reproduced Seder ceremony, The Joy of Passover effectively takes viewers through each step of the intricate proceedings, while clearly pointing out the differences between traditional methods and modern substitutes. Passover is celebrated for eight days during late March and early April, with the Seder ceremony taking place on the first (or first two) evenings. The program begins with a brief historical overview of the Jewish bondage under Egyptian rule which resulted in the ten plagues and eventual deliverance of the Jews, celebrated by the Passover. Following this, viewers are shown how the home is prepared for the Seder ceremony. Then, with the table set, the family sits down to the various foods, matzahs, and wine, while voiceover narration explains the significance and symbolism of each action in the Seder ceremony. A 16-page booklet, featuring background information, recipes, songs, and a bibliography, is included with the tape. Highly recommended.
