Colorful costumes, fancy footwork, and symbolic overtones characterize this vibrant collection of video clips cataloging African dance. The volume we watched looked at the music and dance of Gambia, Liberia, Ghana, and Nigeria, with segments running anywhere from under a half-minute to over seven minutes. The accompanying book offers historical and cultural details on each of the dances, and the jacket liner provides an index. Although of dubious value as a straightforward program, this three-volume anthology would be useful as a solid reference tool for larger black history collections, particularly in school and academic settings. Otherwise, this is an optional purchase. A two-volume set on Europe is also newly available. Aud: J, H, C, P. (R. Pitman)
