Despite its title, this two-volume set gives only the barest outline of Michelangelo's life; rather, its focus is on his works, specifically, the Pieta, David, Sistine Chapel, tomb of Julius II, Moses, Medici Sacristy, fortifications of Florence, Last Judgment, quarry at Carerra, dome of St. Peter, and the Vatican. Despite a somewhat washed out appearance (the set is, after all, 14 years old) and a rather cursory approach to the artwork itself (we could have tolerated a bit more background and perspective), the narration and cinematography more-or-less get the job done, so these tapes would be a serviceable addition to collections lacking any other materials on the topic. Optional. Aud: J, H, C, P. (K. Glaser)
