Monty Python's Flying Circus has landed again, this time smack in the middle of a 3-volume A&E documentary celebrating their 30th anniversary with memorable moments, rare sketches, and interviews with original troupe members Michael Palin, Terry Gilliam, John Cleese and Eric Idle, as well as with other celebrities and fans, such as Kevin Kline, Meatloaf and Sir David Frost. The first volume, hosted by cross-dressing comedian Eddie Izzard, chronicles the troupe's origins and launch of their infamous and innovative British comedy series. The second volume continues with an exploration of famous landmarks of Pythonland with Michael Palin, before moving on to a retrospective of Monty Python's greatest hits, including "Nun Boiling in Doncaster," the "Long John Silver Gavotte," the famous "Spring Dance of the City Stockbrokers," and international musical hits "The Spam Song" and "Every Sperm Is Sacred." The final volume features the lost German Episode, mouse roping, chicken mining, and two Olympic sporting spectaculars: the soccer match between the German and Greek philosophers and the world self-wrestling championships. My first introduction to Pythonmania was in high school with the "Minister of Silly Walks." Now 25-plus years and a few academic degrees later I still try to find the socially redeeming qualities of the Python phenomenon and here offer a rationale that may help you justify purchasing this title: "Monty Python, while engaging in brilliantly caustic social and political satire of the Mother Country, circa the '70s, also greatly influenced comedic writing for American television." Of course, if you don't really need a jargon-laden excuse, then just buy it because it's fun. Enthusiastically recommended. Aud: C, P. (L. Stevens)
