Photojournalist Jim Burroughs retraces the steps of Lt. Colonel John H. Patterson, the British Army engineer responsible for the building of a railway in Tsavo, East Africa, and the inspiration for Hollywood's bite out of Africa The Ghost and the Darkness (a story of man-eating lions and scenery-chewing actors). Weaving excerpts from Patterson's personal journal, Burroughs own modern day safari, and scenes from the movie, viewers are treated to front row seats for the greatest lion hunt in history. Nicely photographed, but surprisingly short on drama, the video ends abruptly, leaving the audience a little hungry. Still, this is recommended for most collections. Aud: H, C, P. (N. Plympton)

Star Ratings
As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
