Recorded “live” at La Taverne de L'Olympia in Paris, France in 1970, the Moody Blues “perform” 13 tunes from the early heyday, including the hits “Lovely to See You,” “Legend of a Mind,” “Nights in White Satin,” “Ride My See-Saw,” “Tuesday Afternoon,” and “Question.” The quotation remarks are around “live” and “perform” because even though Justin Hayward, John Lodge, Mike Pinder, Ray Thomas, and Graeme Edge are onstage, the songs appear to be mostly studio versions with some lip-synching (although one verbal miscue reminds us that the mikes are turned on). Touted as the only existing record of the band from this period, The Moody Blues: The Lost Performance, Live in Paris '70--presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 and stereo (that is serviceable but also features some distortion)--may have some historical value, but as a music DVD (also extra-less) this is disappointing, and except for completists, most would be better off with the flawed but superior The Moody Blues Hall of Fame: Live from the Royal Albert Hall (VL-1/01), which features all of the above-named tunes (except “Lovely to See You”) and several of the later hits besides. Optional. Aud: P. (R. Pitman)
