Produced by KIRO-TV in Seattle, The Moon's Prayer focuses on the efforts of Native American tribes in the Pacific Northwest to reverse the destruction of the environment brought about by mechanization and industrialization. Consisting of a series of profiles of individual activists, the program looks at the work of men and women like Bill Frank Jr. and the late Hamilton Greene of the Makah tribe, Jewell James of the Lummi tribe, author Bruce Brown, and animal lover Bobbi Rose to restore salmon hatcheries, clean up polluted waters, and repair destroyed wetlands. Thanks to new dams, oil spills, and clearcutting, many of the beaches along the coast of the Pacific Northwest are contaminated and indigent species are being threatened (a good number of salmon runs have been virtually destroyed). Fortunately, activists in the Native American tribes of the Pacific Northwest are committed to preserving the environment and are making great strides in overturning the damage done. An inspiring and nicely produced documentary, The Moon's Prayer nevertheless has more regional than national appeal. Pacific Northwest libraries will surely want to add this; others might consider according to the size of their environmental video collection. Recommended.
