Is there a cover-up in the field of archaeology? Common wisdom says that mankind first appeared in southern Africa approximately 100,000 years ago. However, scientists and authors who claim to have found proof to the contrary say they can't get a hearing. One of the mysteries uncovered in this video is the case of what appears to be human footprints found in the same geological strata as dinosaur tracks, supposedly proving that men and dinosaurs walked the American southwest together. The video also ponders the still unfound "missing link" that Darwin felt would prove his theory of evolution, and examines a megalithic city in the Bolivian Andes which seemingly predates the logical appearance of man in that region--one which bears marked similarities to other megaliths around the world. The most intriguing theory concerns the possibility that the legendary lost continent of Atlantis may be buried in Antarctica under two miles of ice. The documentary suggests a cyclical view of civilization, one which both advances and retreats. Originally airing on NBC, this program, hosted by Charlton Heston, is archaeology lite--entertaining yet fairly informative. Such programs draw high ratings and appeal to the Unsolved Mysteries crowd. It's a good addition, especially for public library collections. Aud: H, C, P. (S. Rees)
