After many years, during which it was generally accepted that the brain was hardwired at a relatively young age, neuroscience has revealed that the brain is actually more like “plastic”: just as physical exercise makes for a fitter body, exercising the brain leads to a healthier mind. Narrated by Peter Coyote, this PBS-aired documentary from filmmaker Eli Brown features interviews from various experts in the field as well as case studies. Exhibit A is a young man named Willie Brown—long since written off by both his teachers and himself—who experiences an almost miraculous transformation in high school as he undergoes “brain fitness training,” along the way learning to read and gaining a much fuller understanding of his capabilities. DVD extras include additional interviews touching on ADHD/ADD and dyslexia, the components of language, and classroom environments that enhance learning. Offering a hopeful message that all children are capable of changing their patterns and becoming more successful, this is recommended. Aud: J, H, P. (J. Whiting)
