A handsomely-produced documentary paring down the two weeks of the 2004 Wimbledon tournament into a seriously compact 52 minutes, this program presents all of the major points of play here between the opening ceremonies and the trophy presentations. This Wimbledon was certainly not lacking in drama, including 17-year-old Russian sensation Maria Sharapova getting the best of two-time defending champ Serena Williams, and pony-tailed Swiss superstar Roger Federer maintaining his number one ranking in the face of American phenomenon Andy Roddick. There were also plenty of spoilers trying to stage their own upsets: Croatia's Goran Ivanisevic attempted to recapture his 2001 triumph while Americans Lindsay Davenport and Jennifer Capriati worked hard to stay relevant against younger and stronger talent. Even veteran Martina Navratilova made a return to the court after a 10-year absence; the crowd's wildly enthusiastic reaction was, alas, not enough to fuel the 47-year-old icon back to the performance level of her halcyon days. Capturing the essence of the athleticism, pressure, and prestige that makes Wimbledon the year's most important tennis event, The Official 2004 Wimbledon DVD is also blessed with witty narration penned by Andrew Longmore of The Sunday Times and delivered with proper aplomb by novelist/actor Stephen Fry (Wilde), which more than compensates for the abbreviated, hour-shy coverage.
